The ionic bond results from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles, called ions. Ions can be charged atoms or group of bonded atoms. Atoms of the elements with metal character can lose their valence electrons and become positively charged ions or cations. Atoms of non-metal elements can gain electrons and become negatively charged ions, or anions. the cations and anions have completed valence shell and stable electron configuration. Substances containing ionic bond do not exist as isolated molecules. They form ionic solids – three dimensional network, where each cation is surrounded by anions and each anion is surrounded by cations.
