Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons that contain only C-C and C-H covalent bonds. The general formula for acyclic hydrocarbons is CnH2n+2 where n is the number of carbon atoms in the molecule. The nomenclature of alkanes is in the basis for naming large number of organic compounds. The chemical bonds between carbon atoms in alkanes are strong covalent bonds. The carbon and hydrogen have near electronegativity and the bonds C-H are thinly polar. Alkanes have low reactivity and undergo mainly reactions of substitution and combustion. The alkanes are used as fuels. They are wide spread in the nature. The crude oil and natural gas contain mostly alkanes.
