Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons containing double bond (C=C). Alkenes are unsaturated so atoms can add to them via C=C double bond. The general formula of the alkenes' series is CnH2n. The pi-bond is the reason for the higher reactivity of alkenes with respect to alkanes. The basic reactions for alkenes are addition, oxidation and polymerization. The two covalent bonds in the double bond are not equal. The sigma-bond is stronger than the pi-bond. Alkenes are raw materials for many chemical syntheses.
